Sujet: ANNONCE: ASBL Linux.be - http://linux.iguana.be/ Onderwerp: AANKONDIGING: Linux.be - http://linux.iguana.be/ Dear Linux friends, Linux.be is a Belgian nonprofit organization (``VZW''), that wants to offer structure and visibility to all Linux and Open Source activities in Belgium. Behind the screens, we have been preparing a website, with information and links for the whole range of interested people, from the absolute beginner to the decision taker in a large company. We want to complement the Linux User Groups in Belgium, by taking care of common organisational issues, and by serving as a central point of reference. The latter function is mainly important to promote Linux and Open Source with companies, schools, and national and regional political bodies (Education, Culture, Science, etc.). The ``linux.be'' domain name had, unfortunately, already been taken at the moment we applied for it. The current owner has shown large reluctance to cooperate, except on his own terms. These, however, are unacceptable to us, because they differ too much from the unselfish tradition of the worldwide Open Source community: Linux.be wants to be a transparant organisation, supported by unpaid volunteers. We have tried several times to persuade the current owner to transfer the domain, but failed. In addition, we waited to see whether he could fulfill his claims to build a full-fledged Linux portal site serving the needs of the Belgian Linux community. We waited in vain. Therefore, we decided not to wait any longer, and launch the linux.be website now, even with a URL that is less than satisfactory: Until now, Linux.be has been the work of a small number of individuals, but we do not wish to keep a monopoly on the contents of the website. On the contrary. In the best Open Source tradition, we welcome inputs from all volunteers, on any level. The website contains the details on the many ways you can contribute. Please, accept our invitation to do so. The website wants to be ``Belgian,'' and hence provides room for french, german and dutch versions, in order to get people started in their own language. An english version exists too, which is mainly targeted to the more advanced users. We do not aim to keep the different language versions completely synchronised all the time, because each language has its own focus of interest, and contributors with different skills and backgrounds. Linux.be is certainly not the first initiative to promote Open Source: organisations such as LinBel (http://linbel.iguana.be/) and linuxbe.org (http://linuxbe.org/) paved the way. Both of them are currently backing our efforts, and contributing significantly. In addition, cooperations with the dutch initiative nl.linux.org (http://nl.linux.org/) are already taking place. This boosts our confidence that we will be able to rely on a solid basis of collaborators. We explicitly want to express our gratitude towards Iguana, because their effective support has allowed us to make Linux.be into what (we hope) it is now: a central and open body that serves the complete Belgian Open Source community. But the final word is always yours, the user: we provide information and means to cooperate, in the hope that they fill your needs. If they don't, please let us know how we should improve them. Together, we can go a long way! Chers amis de Linux, Linux.be est une ASBL qui a pour but d'offrir plus de structure et de transparence à Linux et autres activités Open Source en Belgique. Nous sommes déjà actifs depuis quelques mois dans l'ombre pour développer le site web avec des informations et des liens autant pour le néophyte que pour le domaine des entreprises et les décideurs. Le but est d'être complémentaire aux activités des groupes d'utilisateurs de Linux en Belgique, de prendre en charge des activités communes à tous les LUGs et de pouvoir servir de point central et coordinateur. C'est justement ce dernier élément qui est nécessaire lors du contact avec des sociétés, des écoles, les Ministères de l'Education, etc... Malheureusement, le domaine `linux.be' ne nous est toujours pas attribué, malgré une demande que nous avons fait parvenir. Le propriétaire actuel ne veut en aucun cas collaborer, excepté à ses conditions. Celles-ci sont inacceptables pour nous, parce qu'elles sont contraires à la tradition altruiste de la communauté Open Source: Linux.be veut être une organisation transparente, supportée par des bénévoles. Nous avons essayé à maintes reprises de convaincre le propriétaire actuel de transférer le domaine, mais il n'y a rien à faire. De plus, nous avons attendu de voir s'il pouvait remplir sa promesse de créer un site portal au service de la communauté Linux de Belgique... en vain. Dans ces conditions, nous avons décidé de ne plus patienter et de lancer le site linuxbe.org maintenant, même avec une URL qui est loin d'être satisfaisante: Jusqu'à présent, Linux.be a été le travail d'un nombre restreint de personnes, mais nous ne désirons pas garder un monopole quant au contenu du site. Tout du contraire: dans la meilleure tradition Open Source, nous accueillons tout volontaire, à quelque niveau que ce soit. Sur le site figurent des informations sur les nombreuses possibilités qui vous sont offertes de contribuer. Veuillez accepter notre invitation de participer à notre effort. Le site a aussi pour but d'être ``belge'' et offre donc de l'espace pour des versions en néerlandais, allemand et français, de manière à permettre à tout le monde de se lancer dans sa langue maternelle. Une version en anglais existe également, et elle est plutôt axée sur un public plus avancé. Nous n'avons pas la prétention ni l' intention de voulour garder toutes les versions synchrones en permanence, car chaque langue a ses propres centres d'intérêt et ses contributeurs de l'expérience et des talents différents. Linux.be n'est certainement pas la première initiative pour promouvoir le mouvement Open Source en Belgique: des organisations telles que LinBel (http://linbel.iguana.be/) et LinuxBe.org (http://linuxbe.org/) ont déjà préparé le chemin. Elles nous aident dans nos efforts et contribuent de manière significante. De plus, des coopérations avec l'initiative néerlandaise nl.linux.org (http://nl.linux.org/) sont déjà en train de se mettre en place. Tout cela nous renforce considérablement, car nous savons que nous pourrons compter sur une solide base de collaborateurs. Nous aimerions tout particulièrement exprimer notre gratitude envers Iguana, car leur aide intensive nous a permis de faire de Linux.be ce qu'il est aujourd'hui (du moins, nous l'espérons ;)): un site central et ouvert au service de l'entière communauté Open Source belge. Mais le mot final vous appartiendra toujours, à vous les utilisateurs: nous vous fournissons des informations et des moyens de contribuer, en espérant qu'ils sont adéquats à vos besoins. Si ce n'est pas le cas, veuillez nous laisser savoir comment nous pouvons les améliorer. Ensemble, nous pouvons aller très loin... Achter de schermen zijn wij al enkele maanden bezig met een website in elkaar te boksen, met informatie en links voor zowel de absolute beginner als de zakenwereld. Het is de bedoeling om complementair te zijn aan de activiteiten van de Linux gebruikersgroepen in België, door die zaken te verzorgen die gemeenschappelijk zijn voor alle LUGs, en die een centraal aansprekingspunt vereisen. Dit laatste is vooral nuttig bij kontakten met bedrijven, scholen, de Ministeries van Onderwijs, Cultuur, en dergelijke. Ongelukkigerwijze is het domein `linux.be' reeds toegekend vooraleer wij een aanvraag hadden ingediend. De huidige eigenaar wil niet meewerken, tenzij op zijn voorwaarden. Deze zijn echter voor ons onaanvaardbaar, omdat ze te ver afwijken van de onbaatzuchtige filosofie van Open Source: Linux.be wil een transparante VZW zijn, steunend op onbetaalde vrijwilligers. We hebben meerdere keren geprobeerd om het domein te verkrijgen, maar zonder sukses. We hebben ook afgewacht of de huidige eigenaar inderdaad zijn beloften zou vervullen om van het domein een echte Linux-site te maken; ook tevergeefs. Vandaar dat wij besloten hebben om de Linux.be website toch te lanceren, zij het op een iets-minder-dan-ideale adres: Linux.be is tot hiertoe het werk geweest van enkelingen, maar wij wensen helemaal geen monopolie te houden op de inhoud van de Linux.be site. Integendeel. In de beste Open Source filosofie verwelkomen wij alle input van jullie, op welk niveau dan ook. Details over hoe je kan meewerken vind je op de website. De website wil `Belgisch' zijn, zodat zowel een Franstalig, Duitstalige als een Nederlandstalig gedeelte is voorzien, zodat ieder de kans krijgt in zijn eigen taal bediend te worden. Er is ook een Engelstalige versie. De drie versies zijn geen getrouwe kopies van elkaar, omdat elk zijn eigen doelpubliek heeft. Zo is de Engelse tak de technisch meer gevorderde, en richten de andere zich ook op regionale kwesties zoals onderwijs. Er zijn in het verleden reeds erg nuttige, gelijkaardige initiatieven genomen, waaronder LinBel (http://linbel.iguana.be/ en linuxbe.org (http://linuxbe.org/). Beide organisaties hebben ons hun volledige steun toegezegd, en informatie-uitwisseling en samenwerking hebben reeds konkrete vormen aangenomen. Net zoals met het Nederlandse nl.linux.org (http://nl.linux.org/). Wij zijn dus overtuigd te kunnen rekenen op een sterke basis. Wij wensen hier uitdrukkelijk een woord van dank te richten aan Iguana, zonder wiens daadwerkelijke hulp we heel wat minder ver zouden staan. Hopelijk komen wij met dit initiatief tegemoet aan de behoeften van jullie, Linux-gebruikers en -geinteresseerden. Laat ons weten hoe het verder moet!
